Geesala boxing club had a good day at the office yesterday in Westport. First into the ring was Gerard Coyle who took on Pearce Brennan of GBC Galway. Gerard boxed well considering he was sick for the previous two weeks with tonsillitis. It was a close contest with the tall Brennan trying to use his reach advantage, but Gerard closed down the distance well and caught his Galway opponent with some solid good scoring backhands. It went right down to the wire, but Gerard had his hand raised on a 17-16 scoreline, Gerard meets Dillon Ward of Olympic next weekend. Next into the ring was Darren Timlin, his opponent was Dara Flaherty of Olympic BC. Darren used his reach advantage well and pushed forward taking the first round 8-1.  He took his foot off the gas a little in the second round but he was always in control with the scoreline 4-2 at the end of the second. In the third round he worked hard throwing some good combinations with authority, and won this round 7-2. Darren took this win on a scoreline of 19 points to 5. This has secured Darren's place in the final next saturday, February 25th, where he will meet the very experienced Cillian O'Donnell of Swinford Boxing Club. Ciara Ginty, Shannon Timlin and Louise Donohoe received walkovers - these girls will compete in Dublin in the all-Irelands in late April.
